Personalized intelligent system of mobile teaching for the improvement of an effective teaching of English language.

Preface

English is a very important international language, therefore teaching of it is crucial in every country. Thanks to the quick development of wireless networking and technologies, mobile teaching is considered to be brand new and effective method of learning. One of these methods is the Personalized Intelligent Mobile teaching System (PIMS), which consists in recommending the articles in English that are based on the student’s vocabulary and reading skills to the student. Currently the PIMS system was successfully applied in the personal digital assistants (PDA). The experimental results showed that the proposed system ensures effective learning.

 

Introduction

In recent years, mobile users, who browse web pages on their mobile phones or PDA devices, are the fastest developing internet community.

Spreading of e-learning and one of its branches: m-learning which is the mobile teaching, is connected with this fact. Mobile education is considered to be an effective form of a flexible teaching because it is not limited like the traditional teaching, which has to take a place in the classroom or on the stationary computers in one place.

 

The architecture of the system

The personalized intelligent mobile teaching system (PIMS) is supported by an individual system of learning the vocabulary, which includes the remote training server, the client of the mobile learning system, and the data which are synchronized with the help of an agent. To keep the cohesion of the data between the database of the client and the server the Microsoft SQL Server is used.

Learning procedure

1. The user logs-in to the mobile learning system. The system checks the user’s account in the database of users. If the client owns the record of the learning progress, the system
    willgather the  information about reading skills, otherwise the user will be treated as a new one-the beginner.

2. Depending on the reading skills of the user, the system choses an adequate articles in English.

3. After clicking on the title of the article, the agent downloads its content in English and a suitable translation in the native language of the user.

4. After reading the article, the user fills in two questionnaires concerning the level of difficulty ( easy, medium, hard) and the level of understanding the text in English language
    (from 0  to 100 percent).

5. The personalized centre of vocabulary recommendation comes up with new or unknown vocabulary together with its translation in the native language.

6. The whole acquired vocabulary is summed up in order to confirm its assimilation and to put it in the user’s database.

7. The personalized centre of training recommendation will again mark user’s reading skills, according to the answers in the two questionnaires, and then will return to the step 2.
    Until the next educational cycle.

Summary

Studies on this teaching system proved, that with the use of an appropriate articles, the level of the knowledge of English language and the quantity of successfully learned vocabulary increased and gave positive results.

The course of learning is adapted to everyone depending on their knowledge. In order do improve the results of learning the vocabulary while reading articles in English, some words that the user has never met before are being detected and pulled out of the text.
The choice of English texts for the individual user is based on the difficulty of the text as well as on the feedback of the user.

PIMS posesses  big possibilities in the context of being based on m-learning, its biggest advantages are: lack of necessity of using a classroom or owning a stationary computer.

The only requirements are constant or temporal access to the Internet  in order to update the database, as well as owning a mobile device with the support for suitable applications is important.
